Printing – Laser vs. Inkjet

By Chris Elsey - Founder Of Elsey's Web Services

With the cost of printing technology now down to sensible prices you now have the choice when looking for a new printer between a laser and inkjet. Before you can consider the right printer for you first work out how often you will be printing and more importantly when you do print, what volume you print. Once you have established this you will then have more of an idea on what you might need to go for.

What you will find is that an inkjet will only print a couple of hundred pages and might cost you about £15 for a black cartridge. However if you had the correct laser printer you could find yourself printing 2000 pages for about £50/60 so an approximate saving of £90. You will also find a better resolution and sharper printing with a laser printer. You will also see a dramatic increase in the speed of printing.

There is a down side of laser printing though and that’s colour printing. Although colour printing with a laser printer will give truly fantastic quality prints it can very costly. On some colour laser printers it can be £90 for an OEM toner. You will need four toners in a colour laser printer. The four needed are Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. So you could find yourself with a £360 for a full set of toners. It might be worth spending more on the printer as manufactures often sell the printers cheap even at a loss in some cases and make their money off toner sales.

If you are after a high volume printing solution you’re more than likely better off with a laser but if you only want to print the odd picture or electronic tickets, stick with an inkjet.

A cheap to run inkjet is the Kodak ESP7 USA. Or Kodak ESP7 UK. Black and colour ink will cost you from £14 with some retailers. To buy one click on the UK or US technology store.
