The BlackBerry Curve 8520
By
Chris Elsey
This is a great phone to have and BlackBerry should be proud of it. Being one of the cheapest BlackBerry’s
on the market it’s easily within everyone's reach. It has the work/personal life balance and it’s easy to see
how. Available in two colours with a third exclusive to T Mobile there’s a BlackBerry Curve 8520 for all.
The Good
Email direct to the handset is the best feature on the phone. Someone sends you an email and it
arrives on your BlackBerry within minutes. The good thing is you can reply straight away without going anywhere
near a computer. The setup of email is also straight forward. Not everyone has the technical knowledge to figure
out the pop server settings and this is where the BlackBerry comes into its own. All you need to tell it is your
email address and password, it goes away to find the settings and your done. To add to this there is the full QWERTY
keyboard for sending emails and SMS text messages. You will be surprised how quickly you can compose a message using
this keyboard. It also has a 3.5m headphone jack and a built in MP3 player. Add to this the card slot supporting
an 8GB micro SD card and you’ll never need a separate MP3 player. There are also apps available for download. Some are
free and some you have to pay for but if you have a Facebook account the one must is the Facebook app which allows you
to update your status on the go and instantly receive messages off your friends. You will also find many of the other
features useful such as Bluetooth, WI-FI and Speakerphone. It has a good battery life lasting an average
of 5 days dependent on use. If you are only interested in email, phone calls, SMS texts and browsing the web then this is
the BlackBerry for you.
The not so Good
While it does have a built in camera it’s only a 2MP. There is also no 3G with this model and there
is no FM radio. For features like these you will need to look at the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The only down side to this is it
will cost you. You can pick the Curve up for around £199 pay as you go but the Bold will cost around £350 so a £150 price difference.
